Small Medium Large is album of deeply technical and crystal clear improvised jazz, recorded in L.A. at ETA (R.I.P.)

Some folks like myself might’ve first enjoyed Anna Butterss on 2022s Activities which is a wonderful album as well. You may also have heard her, and several other members of this quintet, on record with the fabulous Jeff Parker (of Tortoise etc.) This new project is immensely powerful, very creative and certainly psychedelic.

Like so many of my favorite psychedelic records, Small Medium Large was recorded live across several performances and heavily mixed and rearranged into a stand alone work. It retains all the power and life of its improvised roots but the incredible listening ability of the musicians- an ability that makes up the soul of any jazz ensemble- is given another chance to shine in the creation of these finished tracks.

Many flavors of jazz, post prog, and krautrock are touched upon to create an album that’s unique, progressive and very pleasant to listen to. Fans of modern composition, improvised music, or classic art rock are going to enjoy this immensely.  It’s got that nice freewheeling-yet-repetitive thing going on with a big low end and strong, Miles-esq melodies which are all things I enjoy about modern L.A. jazz in general. I hope there’s more to come from this wonderful group.
