The legendary psych-prog-garage-whatever behemoth Osees has bestowed upon us their most heady official live album since 20221s The Chapel, SF. These are long jams on rare material, with the only set staple being C- usually their jammiest song but in this strange company it’s a radio hit by comparison. The choice of material and the general pacing of the show makes room for a more delicate and subtle Osees which might have added appeal for fans of traditional prog rock and others who enjoy sitting down at concerts.
I feel like Dwyers unique sense of weirdness comes through really well on this album. Like a Mark Mothersbaugh or Les Claypool I think John Dwyer has his own signature kind of angular, quasi-grotesque almost humorous weirdness that permeates his work aesthetically and musically. That voice has become a lot more defined in the past 7 or 8 years and this set of newer material played in longer forms expresses his Dwyer-ness particularly well. Hardcore Osees heads and skeptics should check this one out, but if you’re still mostly spinning the early Oh Sees stuff maybe work through the live albums in order.
