Dodheimsgard has always been an outlier. Black metal is their palette, but the tools that they put it to use with are always experimental, often industrial, and regularly spacey and trippy. It’s always a treat when DHG has a new one for us, and this one is no exception. 2015 was his most recent effort, with the mindwarping “A Umbra Omega”, which I thoroughly enjoyed in its utter oddball complexity.

This is a project that has nothing to prove anymore, yet it continues to do so. Black metal is a powerful genre that can be taken many places, yet it so very rarely is. We’re seeing it a lot more these days in great ways (like Liturgy, of course), but DHG has been paving the road for this kinda thing for a long time. This time around we see the requisite avantgarde industrial black metal, but there’s also elements of death, post, and prog. Keyboards are used to wonderful effect, oftentimes evoking a Floydian vibe, in richly layered compositions long instrumental passages that drift you away into the unknown shining brilliance of the stars of cold hell.

Psychedelic, experimental, heavy.
