This album from Beijing producer Howie Lee continues the jazz influenced sound of his previous two records while continuing his unique style of experimental bass/dance music with traditional Chinese influences. Birdy Island builds upon the cleaner, less distorted sounds of the previous LP 7 Weapons Series with additional live choral work that makes for his most beautiful record yet. For the first time his sound is more akin to jazzy folktronica than juke or dubstep. The experimentation is less confrontational and more ambient. This is probably Lees most accessible and best arranged album. It’s a record I return too often on sunny days when I want to hear an album that’s rhythmic, intricate and rich with texture that’s still calming. Birdy Island remains one of my favorite electronic records of the 2020s.
