This is a personal favorite album of mine from a wonderful one-time trio consisting of two electronic guitarists and one drum machine programmer. That might sound out of place for jazz fans unfamiliar with the mastery of Ikue Mori, but her beautiful percussion speaks for itself. Meanwhile Quine and Ribot are unrivaled experimental rock legends, known for (among many things) their work with Lou Reed and John Zorn respectively. This LP sits comfortably at the intersection of ambient Americana, cosmic country, experimental rock, jazz and new age. As this sound has further developed across a new generation of musicians like Sun Araw, William Tyler, Hayden Pedigo, and Barry Walker Jr, Painted Dessert remains a foundational example of this uniquely American music.
