This is a 2020 Black Editions reissue of a P.S.F records all-timer called Musica Transonic. This group/jam is a super session consisting of three of our favorite musicans: Makoto Kawabata of Acid Mothers Temple on guitar, Asahito Nanjo of High Rise on bass, and Yoshida Tatsuya of Ruins on drums. The record is fully improvised, extremely high volume and voltage, and simply incredible. This reissue features a slew of unreleased stuff from the original sessions that have been mixed down by Nanjo himself and inserted seamlessly after the first track.

Musically it’s psychedelic noise/space rock in a trio, which is a format that’s very popular these days. Musica Transonic still hits just as hard as it must have 30+ years ago and pursues compressed and noisy transcendence with a fearlessness that modern groups could learn from. The two younger players, Kawabata and Tatsuya, are definitely a little immature here compared to their later work. However there’s also an urgency and a conciseness here that’s really nice to hear and contributes to the live feeling of the songs. The result is a session that’s a little more textural and free flowing than most of Nanjos discography and a little more raw and heavy than most of Kawabatas. Tatsuya is, of course, one of the greatest drummers to ever live and you’ll hear that was as true in ’95 as it is in ’25.

One more note- the LP edition of this reissue is gorgeous. Black Editions has once again delivered one of the most beautiful sounding and looking presses of all time. Anyone collecting LPs will appreciate the detail that went into the packaging and pressing here.
