This is the first proper LP from the progressive and electronic jazz duo Dolphin Hyperspace. The group is saxophonist Nicole McCabe and Logan Kane on bass/beats/synths. It’s just them on almost all the instruments and synths and beats, and they create a busy and complex sound. There are however a few notable features here including blog favorite Louis Cole sitting in on drums (something he’s also done live with the group.)
I first heard about Dolphin Hyperspace after my second time seeing Louis Coles big band. During that lengthy festival set Nicole McCabe stole the show. There was a lengthy back and forth where Louis pushed her to take more consecutive solos than anyone was expecting, and the result was some of the most energetic and compelling improv I’ve ever heard.
Nicole delivers that level of improvisation consistently across these tracks. Every solo absolutely rips and they’re all interesting and catchy. Logan Kane is an unbelievable player as well, and his contributions to the electronic/produced side are just another facet of his rhythmic mastery. Simply put: the beats are bonkers and the drum and bass go crazy. The warm and funky saxaphone is the perfect counterweight. When the bass and sax interplay over the synths and beats, its magic.
The electronic production, overall tone, and both players seamless melodic synthesis of different pop and jazz stylings add up to a really fresh and surprisingly accessible sound. Dolphin Hyperspace fully embodies and further defines the hyperreal electroacoustic post-fusion sound of Internet-age nujazz.
