Blog favorites Dope Purple continue to push themselves into increasingly intense sonic territory with new collaborations. This album/performance features some classic skronk delivered from saxophonists Yong Yandsen and additional percussion from Darren Moore. They recorded this at midnight, in their hometown room, presumably packed full with friends and fans.

The format for the material and group is the same as always- a singular riff driven to a place of pure transcendence via the now five piece band and whoever is around to sit in. This record recalls Acid Mother’s Temple at their heaviest. The devotion to the riff is pure. You can hear them searching in the improvisation, taking it deeper and farther. 

Sometimes adding aggressive sax to music like this can be a little one-note but there’s no such problem here. The playing flows effortlessly from crushing high speed runs to high and wide drones. A few collaborative albums in and I’m pretty sure Dope Purple can do no wrong. Psych fans tap in, these guys should be heard far and wide.
