Earth Flower is a new psychedelic and experimental pop project from blog favorites Ruth Garbus and Sam Gendel with prolific side man Phil Melanson on drums. It’s another significantly underrated project from some of the most consistent and interesting contemporary musicians.

Ruth’s songwriting and singing is as calmly impressive as ever but with a particularly loose and psychedelic feeling. It reminds me of OSR tapes or 2010s era Karl Blau. Likewise the instrumentation is classic Sam Gendel, avant garde with a kinda chamber jazz vibe. This album adds heady but tasteful sounds of 20th century psychedelic pop and new age that fit right in.

I love it thematically, sonically and lyrically. I think it’s very interesting and has lovely spiritual, natural energy. They’re two of my favorite artists and while it doesn’t transcend either of their discography, I don’t think it’s meant too. It’s a humble and relaxed record whose depth comes naturally to it. I hope to hear another record from them and I really hope they take this group on the road. It’s something I’m dying to see that I would have high expectations for, given all three members history of incredible improvisation.
