This is an album of timeless traditional folk music interpreted at the highest level and with the utmost respect. Any fan of experimental music, slowcore, folk traditions (Irish or otherwise) or angular guitar music ala Branca, Quine etc will enjoy this immensely. I was in love at first listen, and seeing John play live and hearing his thoughts on the music as he played it was really quite moving. He’s the real deal, folks.

There’s a lot of thought put into these songs- from the selections and interpretations to the minute details in the different vocal deliveries and the delicate blend of electric, acoustic and electronic instruments. It’s properly Irish as well, with plenty of longing and a foggy, droney atmosphere. There’s a running theme of freedom (or lack thereof ) is unfortunately as timely as ever.

I’ll be enjoying these tunes for years, but it’s rewarding on first listen as well.  Of the songs with which I was already familiar, these have become my favorite versions by far. He’s a real killer live act too. Don’t sleep on it.
