It’s another in a long line of excellent and inimitable albums from this Taiwanese duo, and their second for Guruguru Brain. Their signature sample based experimental psychedelic pop has always been evocative of their south Asian surroundings, albeit through a fantastical and heady lens. This one’s no exception and plenty of field recordings and samples create a dense and immersive atmosphere.
Compared to some of their more downtempo, new age-esq work this one features a little more aggressive beats and longer, hotter guitar workouts. There’s a lively, almost chaotic energy that brings an invigorating and festive vibe to the record that I really enjoy. The record has great diversity in the selection of instruments and samples and it clearly took skill and immense chemistry to blend it into this distinct and cohesive sound.
Go buy the record and support excellent and prolific musicians on a great young label. Maybe we’ll get a world tour too! Mong Tong, if you’re reading this I have a spare room if you let me try on one of your blindfolds 😉
