Kedef, or Kadef Abgi (2022, Re 2023) is an improvisational ensemble assembled by saxophonist Devin Brahja. The Arabic/North African inspired work definitely centers around the powerful vocals of Ziad Qoulaii but everybody gives a great performance (Sam Shalabi from blog favorites Dwarves of East Agouza has some particularly compelling guitar work.)

Sounds of Moroccan Gnawa, classic Krautrock and modern west coast free jazz come together to create a trance-inducing, genuinely unique sound. One of the freshest and most inspired improvised records I’ve heard in a while. Available now (with slightly different names) on CD, vinyl and streaming.
