This is a very free album with a big band that’s unusually concise in its composition. It’s sonically and emotionally powerful and deeply focused. Even the longest songs get straight to the point and the solos are intense and wordy but never overplayed. Zoh Amba shines as always and their playing greatly contributes to the spiritual weight of the record’s climactic moments. There’s a wide range of sounds and pacing throughout and it’s really engaging from start to finish. I especially appreciate some of the more reflective moments. There’s a strong ear for beauty that’s present in even the most experimental passages. I really love this record and continue to find it very moving and I’d encourage any jazz or modern composition fan to listen closely.
