In an age of musical exploration where genre matters less and less, Philadelphia’s own SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE have managed to carve out their own truly unique little spot. Their most recent album, YOU’LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING, is a real trip and a half, if I can say that. Ideas take shape, gain form, express themselves, and fade into a shifting sea of texture, mood and melody.
It’s been a while since I’ve been confounded by a record like this. It took me a while to even figure out how to start talking about it – multiple listens keep revealing new details, little nuggets I hadn’t picked up on the first couple of spins. Listening to this album is what I imagine it’s like to exist as the shifting images in the lens of a kaleidoscope.
Distinctly modern in its sensibilities, YOU’LL HAVE TO LOSE SOMETHING is a refined statement from a band continually evolving and exploring the fertile ground of 21st century experimental music.
Highly recommended if you’re into heaving guitar, stuttering electronics, warbly cinema ambient B-roll, cyber-lysergia, and the elusive whatnot.
