This is an album of small miracles. The band has been together fifteen years. They’re six wonderful albums deep into their journey. The two band leaders found love in each other. They ended their love as a project after 2014s Survival Sounds. But Rubblebucket- already a successful and hard working live band and no doubt a project of that love as well- somehow persisted. They released their finest work yet as a breakup album, launched successful solo projects, and yet here we are two records later with another introspection on the end of that relationship and the continuation of the band. But don’t think this is a retread in any sense- it’s a new long view given a musical voice. And what a voice it is!
Year of the Banana is a stunning (and fun!) album born of incredible musical skill and deep chemistry. It’s easily one of the finest records of the year. I nominate Kal and Alex for the Friendship Hall Of Fame for their hard work on themselves, each other and this wonderful music.
Fans of the band already know what they’re in for plus a few surprises that I won’t spoil here. For the uninitiated, Rubblebucket makes one-of-a-kind brass driven dance pop with a psychedelic sound and thoughtfully crafted lyrics. It’s an instant delight with lots to give a careful listener and some of the most likeable and genuine music you’ll hear on this blog- or anywhere. Don’t miss it. Find the record in stores or on Bandcamp and check out the opening track and video below.
