This incredible collaboration was among my favorite albums of 2023 (digital release and international vinyl release September 28th 2024.) Mong Tong and Gong Gong Gong are two of my very favorite bands and I immediately got a copy of this LP shipped from the wonderful White Noise Records. My expectations were high and the album exceeded them.

The two very different duos came together perfectly. Recording in Mongok, Hong Kong at President Piano Company was key to creating and capturing this unique session. In a typical Mong Tong fashion it’s an imaginary soundtrack of sorts for a classic HK kung fu film that exists only in their hazy dreams.

I love everything about this record. The unique production and sound of the studio and its house instruments. The looseness that the band possesses while being tightly locked in the pocket really highlights how each duo is it’s own powerful rhythm section (phantom rhythm, you could say.) There’s a great psychedelic feeling and deep creativity present in a deceptively simple package. It’s an album that I’m still getting more out of after a year, and I would love more collaborations from them in the future.
